Win ITL Championship, 12-5

In what has been a tough and tragic week for Rockporters, the Rockport Townies eased the pain of many by easily winning the 2005 Inter-Town League baseball championship, beating the Ipswich Chiefs, 3 games to 1. Rockport batters exploded out of the gate, and by the third inning, led 10-1. At one point late in the game the Townies were up 12-1, before Ipswich mounted a futile late-inning rally to end the game 12-5. Prior to the series, Rockport had not beaten the Chiefs on the diamond in over a year.

Rockport was celebrating the 25th anniversary of their first ITL Championship with several members of the 1980 squad among the huge crowd at Evans Field.

Veteran right-hander Scott Bouchie took the hill for a 12-pitch first inning, including two strikouts. When Rockport came to the plate, they got right to work. Right-fielder Tommy Robertson had a nine-pitch at bat before striking out, then Adam Orlando had a sharp single on the next pitch. Designated Hitter Dave Lindsay then drove a massive flyball deep into the center field woods for a 2-0 advantage.

Continuing to work the Ipswich pitching, Brent Currier singled on the seventh pitch of his at bat. Pitcher Scott Bouchie was hit by a pitch, then captain Marc Bouchie bounced a double into the right field woods to make it 3-0. Chris Bouchie then singled, driving in two runs, then smartly took second on the play. At that point, the Townies had jumped out to a 5-0 lead. Chuck Anderson followed with a single, Jeremy Spittle then singled, scoring Chris Bouchie.

Rockport led 6-0, with 2 men on base and only 1 out after the entire batting order had hit. Tom Robertson, continuing to wear down opposition pitching, drew a walk after another long plate appearance which loaded the bases. Orlando smacked a single up the first base line, scoring all three men, then took second on the throw to the plate and then stole third. Lindsay followed with a strikeout. Brent Currier followed with yet another long fly to the woods, but it was grab at the line for the third out. The Townies had amassed an amaing 9-0 lead after one inning.

The two squads traded runs in the second, and Rockport got an 11th in the third, while the Chiefs continued to play outstanding outfield, again at Currier's expense. The Rockport slugger ended his second inning of the afternoon when the center fielder ran to the chalk line, leaped, webbed the ball, and crashed into the underbrush, disappearing from sight. The play was ruled a catch as his last steps were in play.

The Townie defense came to play as well: Robertson, stalking the right field hillside during the fourth, made a long run into foul ground toward the batting cage and made a diving, rolling catch, rolled up and fired a strike to Currier at third, nearly nipping Chief baserunner scrambling back to second. Against the next batter, Rockport turned a 6-3-5 double play, ending the inning.

The game continued, a few more runs were scored (final score was 12-5), more balls were caught, and the game, series, and season ended with the awarding of trophies and a general feeling of good fellowship and a season and a summer well had. Both teams and the fans gathered in the sun at the grandstand and another season became history. Rockport awarded the trophy and game ball to Jade Donaldson, ranking member of the 1980 Championship squad. Donaldson will continue as Club President next season, with Bruce Emerson as GM, and the whole roster will be returning as no firm retirements were announced, although several players will be nursing injuries or family commitments, and may have to see fewer innings next year.
